AT&T has agreed to pay a $177 million settlement to resolve multiple class action lawsuits stemming from two distinct data breaches disclosed in 2024. These incidents compromised sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers and call records, for approximately 73 million current and former customers. While the company denies any wrongdoing, the settlement provides direct cash restitution to those affected, with potential individual payouts reaching as high as $7,500 for those impacted by both breaches.

Who Is Eligible for the AT&T Settlement?

Eligibility for this settlement is divided into two specific classes based on which breach impacted your data.

  • Class 1 (March 2024 Breach): Includes any living individual whose personal identification information was included in the data set released on the dark web, dating back to 2019. This data included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and account passcodes.
  • Class 2 (July 2024 Breach): Includes AT&T account owners or users whose call and text records were downloaded from a third-party Snowflake cloud platform. This breach covered nearly all customer records between May and October 2022 and on January 3, 2023.
  • Overlap Class Members: If you were impacted by both the March and July incidents, you may be eligible to receive combined payments from both funds.

Payout Tiers and Compensation Options

The $177 million fund is split into a $149 million fund for the first breach and a $28 million fund for the second breach. Payouts are categorized into three distinct tiers based on the type of data exposed and financial harm.

  • Documented Loss Payouts: You can claim up to $5,000 for the first breach and $2,500 for the second if you have proof of out-of-pocket losses. These losses must be traceable to the breaches and can include costs like identity theft protection services or unauthorized bank charges.
  • Tier 1 (SSN Exposed): Class 1 members whose Social Security numbers were leaked will receive a cash payment estimated to be five times larger than Tier 2 payments.
  • Tier 2 (General PII Exposed): Class 1 members whose personal information was leaked, but not their Social Security numbers, will receive a standard base payment.
  • Tier 3 (Call Records Exposed): Class 2 members who were affected by the July metadata breach but did not suffer documented financial losses will share the remaining $28 million fund on a pro-rata basis.
